The mother accused of strangling her 7-year-old daughter, Isabella Dabidyal, to death was on Monday remanded to prison after being charged with murder.

Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, 26, a ten-day worker of Fyrish Road, Corentyne, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.

She appeared calm as the charge was read to her, which stated that on April 5, 2026, at Fyrish Village, Region Six, she murdered the child.

Shivpersaud, a mother of two, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Collin Clarke told the court that the case file is complete and legal advice is being sought.

He also stated that a psychiatric evaluation was conducted and Shivpersaud was deemed fit to stand trial.

Magistrate Matthias informed her that the offence is a serious one and bail cannot be granted. She was then remanded to prison.

The matter was transferred to the Albion Magistrates’ Court and adjourned to May 12.

Family members were present in court during the proceedings.

Reports indicate that Shivpersaud allegedly suffocated Isabella and attempted to strangle her one-year, nine-month-old son. She later slit her own ankles and was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where Isabella was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem examination conducted on April 7 found that the child died as a result of manual strangulation.
