Two freed in gas station bombing case as Magistrate upholds no-case submission

Two of the seven persons charged in connection with the deadly explosion at the Mobil gas station were on Monday freed after the Court upheld a no-case submission.

Ramesh Pramdeo and Wayne Correia were discharged by Principal Magistrate Alisha George at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, following arguments by defence attorney Bernard DaSilva that the prosecution had failed to establish a case against his clients.

DaSilva further contended that Pramdeo and Correia should have been treated as witnesses rather than accused persons in the matter. They had been charged with aiding and abetting the act of terrorism

During the proceedings, the prosecution tendered 244 witness statements, 39 exhibits, 61 discs, three sets of photographs and one flash drive. However, the case against Pramdeo and Correia focused only on evidence directly related to them.

Meanwhile, a third person, 33-year-old Venezuelan national Jennifer Rodrigues, who faced the same charge as Pramdeo and Correia, was committed to stand trial at the High Court.

Other suspects, including the alleged mastermind Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, remain before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Poedemo, along with Alexander Bettencourt, Johnny Boodram and Krystal La Cruz, has been charged in connection with the incident. Poedemo has since admitted that he is solely responsible for the crime. They were charged separately and their case has been adjourned to May 20.
