Elections trial adjourned after courtroom clash

The trial into the 2020 General and Regional Elections was abruptly adjourned on Tuesday after a heated clash between defence attorney Nigel Hughes and witness Bibi Aneishaw Mohamed.

Mohamed, who was an agent of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) during the 2020 elections, had returned to the witness stand for cross-examination after completing her sworn testimony.

She has been under cross examination by Hughes since last Friday.

Proceedings continued during the morning session, but shortly after a break, they were disrupted following the confrontation between Mohamed and Hughes.

During questioning, Mohamed accused Hughes of “putting words in her mouth” and continuously misrepresenting her testimony. Tensions escalated, and although the prosecution attempted to have Mohamed remain silent, those efforts were unsuccessful.

The situation intensified after Hughes described Mohamed as “racial,” triggering a heated back and forth in the courtroom.

Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty intervened as tensions rose. Hughes stood and told the court he had little time left to complete his cross-examination of Mohamed and also sought permission to leave.

As a result, the morning proceedings were adjourned.

The trial is being heard at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and is expected to resume Tuesday afternoon with another witness taking the stand.

Mohamed is scheduled to return to the witness stand on Wednesday, April 29, for the continuation of her cross-examination.

Nine individuals are currently before the court charged with conspiring to manipulate the election results in favour of APNU+AFC, allegedly in an attempt to deny victory to the PPP.

Those charged include former government minister Volda Lawrence, former Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield, former Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo, and former Deputy Chief Elections Officer Roxanne Myers, among others.

The controversy surrounding the March 2020 elections delayed the declaration of results for five months, until PPP candidate Irfaan Ali was sworn in as President on August 2, 2020.
