A mother and her seven children are now homeless after their Glasgow, East Bank Berbice, house went up in flames on Monday morning.

Tricia Wintz, 45, was living in the six-bedroom wooden-and-concrete house with her seven children.

Wintz, who is a Constabulary Officer at the New Amsterdam Municipality, told reporters that she had left home for work around 09:40 hours, and at approximately 10:07 hours, she received distressing news of the fire.

Upon receiving this information, she promptly left her workplace to attend the scene.

Firefighting units from the New Amsterdam Fire Station responded accordingly.

Wintz revealed that her residence was fully furnished, and that all personal belongings of her and her children, including vital documents, were destroyed by the blaze.

She further disclosed that her 23-year-old son, who has a mental health challenge, was at home at the time the fire commenced. She confirmed that her son was detained by law enforcement authorities and was taken for psychiatric evaluation, as investigations are ongoing.

Berbice Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald affirmed that the fire was maliciously set by unknown individuals.

Wintz expressed her belief that her son may have caused the fire, considering his behavioral patterns, although she remains uncertain about his motivations.

In 2006, her previous residence was also destroyed by fire from an unspecified origin. She rebuilt and resided with her family until tragedy struck once more.

Wintz demonstrated resilience and openness to assistance for rebuilding her life.

“Living at somebody’s place, I really can’t cope with that. So whatever assistance I get, I would be grateful for it, just in order to get myself together,” she disclosed.

Anyone wishing to support the family may contact Wintz on 645-5725.
