The capital city is set to burst into a showcase of speed and teamwork this afternoon, Saturday, May 30, as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) hosts the highly anticipated 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee 10K Road Relay.

Staged in close collaboration with the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), the marquee event is scheduled to sprint off at 15:00h, with both the starting gun and the finish line positioned directly in front of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport headquarters on Main Street, Georgetown.

The relay forms a headline feature of Guyana’s landmark 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee celebrations, which have taken over the nation this month.

Organisers are anticipating a massive turnout, with more than 16 formidable teams already registered to battle for national pride and dominance on the tarmac.

Unlike traditional road races, this Diamond Jubilee edition introduces a dynamic team designed to test strategy, stamina, and depth across local athletic clubs and sports federations.

The Lineup: Each competing team must comprise six (6) athletes—specifically four males and two females.

The Legs: The two female athletes will take on the high-speed 1-kilometre legs, while the four male athletes will anchor the team’s endurance with the gruelling 2-kilometre legs.

The open invitation extends across all local clubs, sporting federations, seasoned long-distance runners, and emerging talents looking to make a name for themselves on the big stage.

Athletes will navigate a scenic yet demanding route that winds through the heart of historic Georgetown.

The exact course breakdown is as follows:

The Circuit: Start in front of the MCYS on Main Street ➔ Head South to the Cenotaph ➔ Turn right back onto Main Street ➔ Turn right into Young Street ➔ Right into Camp Street ➔ Left into Church Street ➔ Left into Irving Street ➔ Left into Thomas Road ➔ Right into Camp Street ➔ Left into Seawall Road ➔ Left into High Street ➔ Left into Young Street ➔ Right into Parade Street ➔ Right into Lamaha Street ➔ Left into Carmichael Street ➔ Loop around St. George’s Cathedral ➔ Right into Republic Avenue ➔ Loop around the Cenotaph ➔ Right into Quamina Street ➔ Finish in front of the Ministry on Main Street.

Drivers are advised to expect minor rolling traffic disruptions along the central Georgetown route between 14:30h and 17:00h as the Guyana Police Force assists with managing the course.
