Legal advice to be sought in probe of Zeelugt murder

Investigators are wrapping up the probe into the brutal murder of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed at his Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo house, and will soon seek legal advice.
Deputy Commissioner, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told the News Room on Tuesday that detectives are in the process of concluding the investigation.
Thereafter, he said, the case file will be forwarded to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a legal opinion.
The development comes after the 23-year-old suspect, a farmer, was arrested on Saturday. He reportedly confessed to the crime.
Blanhum had previously confirmed that detectives secured digital evidence pinning the 23-year-old to the crime scene when the tragedy unfolded. When shown the evidence, the man reportedly admitted to the crime, providing gruesome details of what transpired.
Little Mohamed was killed on the morning of June 5 while at home with his 72-year-old great-grandmother. The elderly woman was badly injured and continues to receive medical care.
An autopsy conducted on Monday found that Mohamed died from an incised wound to the neck. The News Room understands that evidence of both sharp and blunt force injuries was observed on the child’s body, injuries consistent with the use of a knife.
Investigators also recovered a knife from the crime scene, which the suspect confirmed was the weapon that he used to kill the boy and injure the elderly woman.
