The government is moving ahead with plans to construct a daycare centre for the children of prison officers and staff as part of ongoing efforts to enhance welfare services within the security sector.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has invited bids for the construction of the facility at Parade Street, Kingston.

The project forms part of the government’s broader agenda to improve working conditions and provide greater support systems for members of the disciplined services and their families.

When completed, the daycare centre is expected to provide a safe and nurturing environment for young children while their parents carry out their duties, helping to ease childcare challenges faced by prison officers and civilian employees.

Over the past several years, the government has invested heavily in strengthening the country’s security architecture while simultaneously improving the welfare of personnel serving in the disciplined services.

These efforts have included salary adjustments, improved infrastructure, upgraded accommodation and training facilities, as well as initiatives to enhance the overall well-being of officers and their families.

The planned daycare facility is expected to complement these measures by providing an additional support service for employees of the Guyana Prison Service.

The Ministry of Home Affairs recently invited bids under the National Competitive Bidding process for the construction of the centre. Interested contractors have until June 30 to submit proposals.

The project underscores the government’s commitment to creating a more supportive working environment for public servants, particularly those serving in critical sectors responsible for public safety and national security.
