Women’s T20 World Cup: West Indies target upset against defending champions New Zealand
The Group 1 clash carries significant weight for Hayley Matthews’ side

A gruelling acclimatisation camp in Wales, warm-up tussles against Australia and India, and a clinical trophy-winning run in Ireland have all led to this.

On Saturday, a revamped West Indies side will launch its ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign at the Hampshire Bowl against holders New Zealand, armed with a blueprint built around powerplay intent and batting depth.

The Group 1 clash carries significant weight for Hayley Matthews’ side, who find themselves in a challenging pool alongside hosts England, Sri Lanka, Ireland, and Scotland.

But rather than being daunted by an opening fixture against the reigning champions, the West Indies camp is viewing it as the ultimate litmus test of their meticulous preparation.

“It doesn’t really matter who we’re playing against,” West Indies head coach Shane Deitz said ahead of the opener.

“Obviously, New Zealand is a good team and they’re defending champions. It was a great game that we had against them in Dubai two years ago, and if a few things had gone our way we probably would have gotten the better of them, but I think we’re two pretty evenly matched teams. It’s important to get off to a good start… the girls have had a lot of preparation, and I think we’re at that stage where we’re just ready to go.”

The recent Evara Women’s International Tri-Series in Ireland provided the ideal springboard for the regional side. Finishing top of the standings ahead of the hosts and Pakistan, the West Indies displayed a balanced brand of cricket that had often eluded them in previous cycles.

Central to that momentum is the form of skipper Matthews, whose all-round exploits remain critical to the team’s fortunes.

“As a team, we are pretty prepared for the tournament,” Matthews said. “World Cups are usually where we as West Indian sides bring out our best performances so hopefully that’s something we can replicate. The first game against New Zealand is obviously going to be pretty important because it’s a big team… It’s about taking it one game at a time.”

The tactical identity of this West Indies squad has shifted deliberately toward aggression in the first six overs and a longer batting tail designed to handle English conditions.

However, executing that plan will require navigating a Southampton surface likely to feel the effects of a typical English early summer.

Cooler temperatures and persistent rain leading up to the tournament mean the toss could prove pivotal.

Deitz expects the conditions to demand discipline from his bowling group while offering a fair contest. “We’ve had a lot of rain and it’s been pretty cold lately, so I expect the pitch to have something in it for the bowlers, particularly with the new ball,” Deitz explained.

“But usually over here, when that happens at these really good grounds, the ball will come onto the bat as well. So, if you bowl in good areas you’re going to get a lot of assistance out of it, but also if you get in and bat well you can make a big score too.”

For a team that historically thrives on momentum and emotional highs, triggering an early upset against the White Ferns would completely alter the complexion of Group 1.

West Indies Squad: Hayley Matthews (capt), Chinelle Henry (vice-capt), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle, Jahzara Claxton, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Jannillea Glasgow, Shawnisha Hector, Zaida James, Qiana Joseph, Mandy Mangru, Ashmini Munisar, Karishma Ramharack, Stafanie Taylor
