Ashley Khalil wins silver at Pan Am Masters

Ashley Khalil’s superb run at the PanAm Masters Squash Championships ended in heartbreak as Chile’s Anita Pinto fought back to deny the Guyanese star gold in a tense four-game final in Medellín.
Khalil had carried a flawless record into the showpiece match in Colombia, having systematically dismantled the draw without dropping a single game.
That imperious form looked set to continue when she ruthlessly took the opening game 11-5, leaving Pinto searching for answers.
However, the Chilean veteran steadily uncovered a blueprint to disrupt Khalil’s rhythm. Pinto snatched a pivotal second game 11-9 to level the match, shift the momentum, and ultimately halt the Guyanese standout’s march to the top of the podium.
From there, Pinto capitalised on the critical moments, securing the continental title with subsequent 11-5 and 11-7 victories.
For Khalil, the silver medal adds yet another prestigious accolade to a glittering international résumé in racquet sports, even if the immediate feeling was one of missed opportunity.
“I am a little disappointed, as I think any athlete would be after reaching a final and falling just short,” Khalil reflected. “However, I had my opportunities during the match and wasn’t able to execute as effectively as I would have liked at some key moments.”
The road to the final had showcased the absolute best of Khalil’s clinical game. She marched through the earlier rounds with a succession of identical 3-0 victories, sweeping aside the American duo of Nathalie Champlain and Grace Birmingham, Chile’s Natalia Diaz, and home favourite Karina Salti of Colombia.
While the ultimate prize proved elusive this time, Khalil is already looking at how the Medellín experience can elevate her game for future international assignments.
“That’s something I will reflect on, learn from, and continue working on as I prepare for future tournaments,” she said. “It’s back to the drawing board now. There are always areas to improve, and this experience has given me valuable lessons that I can take into my training and upcoming competitions.
“Overall, I’m grateful for the experience, proud to have represented Guyana, and pleased to come away with a PanAm Masters silver medal.”
