New wing at Yarrowkabra Primary School brings relief to hundreds of children

A new wing at the Yarrowkabra Primary School was commissioned on Tuesday, signalling greater access to learning for hundreds of children hailing from communities across the Soesdyke- Linden Highway.
The $177 million wing was commissioned by Education Minister Sonia Parag. The new wing has eight classrooms and will accommodate about 200 students from grades four to six. It also has a Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) room for children.
Keane Adams, the Regional Education Officer, explained that the school was built to support about 250 children. However, over 400 children started attending the Yarrowkabra facility. As such, the new wing was constructed to accommodate the children in a more comfortable and spacious environment.

Grade Five teacher Tauheedah Khan told the News Room that the teachers had been trying to accommodate the learners as best as they could in the existing facility. The new wing, she said, provides much-needed support and encourages more children to attend classes regularly.
Meanwhile, Minister Parag said investments like these demonstrate the government’s commitment to expanding access to learning opportunities.
“Building a wing in a school is ensuring that we continue in the path of progress; it is ensuring that our children are taken care of,” she emphasised.
Children have been occupying the new wing since March. Regional Executive Officer, Juan Edghill Jr., told those gathered at Tuesday’s commissioning ceremony that Starlink internet systems would be provided to further support the children at this school.
