Several communities in Region Ten have been flooded due to excessive rainfall over the last few days. The Regional Democratic Council, led by newly appointed Regional Executive Officer Dr Gregory Harris, has commenced assessment of the affected areas and has taken immediate action to bring relief to affected residents.

These communities include Rockstone, West Watooka, Central Amelia’s Ward, South Amelia’s Ward, Kwakwani, Kara Kara, Speightland and Noitgedacht, amongst others.

Harris and his technical team on Saturday, visited several communities as far as Rockstone in an effort to determine and assess what immediate action needs to be taken to bring relief and mitigate further flooding. At Noitgedacht, emergency de-bushing and drain clearing have commenced. At Rockstone, the team met with the village’s Toshao and residents to discuss the impact of the flooding. During the visit, the Toshao highlighted the major problem areas and concerns facing the community, allowing the team to assess the situation firsthand and gather information needed to guide response efforts.

Harris said these visits form part of the government’s ongoing commitment to monitoring affected areas, identifying urgent needs, and supporting communities impacted by the adverse weather conditions. He is set to revisit Kwakwani on Sunday, where some communities, such as Lamp Island and Jeep Landing, are experiencing up to 6 meters of floodwater. Additionally, the culvert under the main access road near the Kwakwani Airstrip has collapsed. Harris assured that emergency response measures are in place in the event that the situation worsens.
