E-biker dies in Craig accident


A 61-year-old electric cycle rider died on Wednesday after he was involved in an accident with a motor lorry along the Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Dead is Lal Singh of New Hope, East Bank Demerara.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the accident occurred at about 17:10 hrs and involved motor lorry GAB 5043, driven by a 29-year-old man of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, and Kwatta, Suriname. The electric cycle was not registered.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry was travelling south along the eastern driving lane of the Craig Public Road in a line of slow-moving traffic when the driver reportedly felt the vehicle pass over a hump.
The driver later heard someone shouting for him to stop. After bringing the vehicle to a halt and reversing a short distance, Singh was discovered lying beneath the left side of the lorry near the front wheel. The electric cycle was found nearby.
Singh sustained multiple injuries as a result of the accident. Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene and transported him to the Diamond Regional Hospital in a semi-conscious condition. He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.
Police said two breathalyser tests were administered to the lorry driver and no trace of alcohol was detected.
The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
