Drivers remanded to prison after Providence fatal accident

Two drivers were charged and remanded to prison on Monday, following Saturday’s fatal accident along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
In a release, Police Headquarters said Kord Sobers, 55, of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, and Colin Cumberbatch, 31, of Kitty, Georgetown, were charged with the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.
Sobers drove motor lorry #GAF 1093, while Cumberbatch was the driver of minibus #BAH 9443. The accident resulted in the death of Ruddy Raymond, a 36-year-old resident of Jonestown, Lima, Essequibo Coast.
The men appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the indictable charges were read to them. They were not required to plead and were remanded to prison.
The matters were adjourned to July 10, 2026, for report.
It was earlier reported that the minibus was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the western carriageway of the Providence Public Road at a reportedly fast rate. At the same time, the motor lorry was travelling north along the western driving lane when it allegedly made a sharp right turn into the eastern lane, directly into the path of the approaching minibus.
The minibus collided with the right side of the lorry before crashing into the median. The vehicle then crossed onto the eastern carriageway, toppled onto its right side and collided with motor car PJJ 1664, which was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane.
As a result of the collision, the driver of the motor car and his passenger, 23-year-old Abei Gravesande of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, were injured. The minibus driver and seven passengers were also injured.
