One dead, several injured in three-vehicle crash at Providence


A 36-year-old man lost his life and several others were injured following a three-vehicle collision along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara on Saturday.
Dead is Ruddy Raymond, 36, of Jonestown, Lima, Essequibo Coast, who was among the passengers travelling in minibus, BAH 9443.
The accident occurred at about 17:00 hrs. A motor lorry, GAF 1093 driven by a 55-year-old man of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara and motor car PJJ 1664 driven by Chevron Benjamin of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, were the two other vehicles involved in the accident.
According to information gathered by the News Room, the minibus was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the western carriageway of the Providence Public Road at a reportedly fast rate of speed.
At the same time, the motor lorry was travelling north along the western driving lane when it allegedly made a sharp right turn into the eastern lane, directly into the path of the approaching minibus.
The minibus collided with the right side of the lorry before crashing into the median. The vehicle then crossed onto the eastern carriageway, toppled onto its right side and collided with motor car PJJ 1664, which was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane.
As a result of the collision, the driver of the motor car and his passenger, 23-year-old Abei Gravesande of Friendship, East Bank Demerara,were injured.
The minibus driver and seven passengers were also injured.
Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene, where Raymond was pronounced dead. The injured individuals were transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they remain receiving medical treatment.
Raymond’s body was later transported to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said the lorry driver was arrested and remains in custody.
Investigations are continuing.
