Police eradicate multi-million dollar cannabis operation in Upper Berbice River


Police ranks on Wednesday destroyed a large-scale cannabis cultivation operation in the Upper Berbice River area, with authorities estimating the value of the narcotics at more than $106 million.
According to information gathered, law enforcement officers conducted an operation in the Kimba Creek, Sand Hill, and Wiruni areas after receiving intelligence about suspected drug cultivation activities.
During the exercise, ranks reportedly uncovered approximately five acres of land under cannabis cultivation. Investigators found an estimated 5,000 cannabis plants ranging from two to six feet in height, along with some 40,000 seedlings being cultivated in nursery beds.
Police also discovered approximately 245 pounds of dried cannabis, 10 pounds of cannabis seeds, three makeshift camps, and a quantity of farming equipment believed to have been used in the operation.
No arrests were reported during the raid.
Authorities said all of the cannabis plants, seedlings, dried narcotics, seeds, camps, and farming tools were destroyed at the scene.
The total estimated street value of the narcotics destroyed has been placed at $106,793,036.
Investigations are continuing as police seek to identify and apprehend those responsible for the illegal cultivation operation.
