Crime Chief Deputy Commissioner, Wendell Blanhum has confirmed the arrest of a Police Constable, who allegedly confessed to killing missing Cuban national, Paneque Gómez, using a teddy bear as a makeshift silencer before fatally shooting a woman and concealing her body in bushes at Enmore, East Coast Demerara.
The rank was identified as Randy Thomas.
The law enforcement officer, who was reportedly involved in a relationship with the Cuban woman, allegedly carried out the fatal shooting in what police believe was a premeditated attack.
Information gathered by the News Room revealed that Thomas reportedly told investigators that he contacted Gómez and arranged to meet her at Enmore, ECD.
He stated that they travelled together in his motor vehicle to the Enmore Backdam area, where they engaged in a discussion that escalated into an argument.
Thomas alleged that Gómez became enraged and assaulted him during the confrontation. He further claimed that he was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and placed a teddy bear against her head before discharging a round, fatally wounding her.
Investigators said Thomas reportedly confessed that after the shooting, he tied Gómez’s body with a rope and dragged it into nearby bushes in an attempt to conceal it. He reportedly told detectives that he purchased the rope on day of the crime, June 18, 2026, from a Chinese supermarket in Mahaica.
The policeman also allegedly admitted that after leaving the scene, he returned to his Mahaica residence where he cleaned the interior of his motor vehicle using hand sanitizer.
Further, Thomas reportedly further disclosed that he disposed of Gómez’s cellular phone and the spent shell by throwing them from a bridge at Unity, East Coast Demerara. He also claimed that he discarded the teddy bear along the roadway leading from the backdam area and threw the firearm into nearby bushes.
Investigators are currently searching for the firearm and other items allegedly discarded following the killing.
Gómez was reported missing after she was last seen during the early morning hours of June 18 while reportedly on her way to work. Work by detectives attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) led to a breakthrough in the case and ultimately to the discovery of her body.
Her remains were found in a decomposed state at about 19:50 hrs in a clump of bushes on the East Coast Demerara. The discovery intensified the investigation, which police say subsequently led to Thomas’ arrest.
Investigations are continuing.
