Fruta Conquerors secure Elite League spot with playoff victory over Timehri United

Fruta Conquerors FC preserved their status in the Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League after executing a clinical 2-0 victory over Timehri United FC in their high-stakes relegation playoff on Wednesday night.
With their place in Elite League Season 8 on the line at the National Training Centre, the Georgetown-based side produced a composed second-half display to break the resistance of their lower-league challengers.
Following a tense and fiercely contested opening 45 minutes, Jamal Codrington provided the vital breakthrough for the top-flight incumbents, turning home in the 56th minute to ease the mounting pressure.
Timehri United pushed for a route back into the tie, but their fate was sealed eight minutes from time when Stefon Walton doubled the advantage with a decisive finish to ensure the two-time champions avoided the drop.
“Winning this match was one of the most important moments in our club’s history because of what was at stake and what it means for the future,” said Fruta Conquerors head coach Jersild Wright. “The motivation to win is imperative. It is what separates good teams from ordinary teams.
“Securing this victory ensures that we remain among the country’s top football clubs in the Elite League, where we belong. It gives us the opportunity to pursue a third title and, ultimately, the chance to represent Guyana on the biggest stage in regional club football.”
The result caps off a challenging campaign for the 44-year-old club, which has established itself as a traditional powerhouse in Guyanese football since its formation in 1982.
Having successfully negotiated a potentially bruising relegation playoff, Wright’s side can now focus on rebuilding ahead of the new Elite League season, safely insulated from the drop for another year. (Modified GFF Press Release)
