Guyana stands in solidarity with Venezuela after deadly earthquakes

President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, has expressed the country’s sympathy and support for the people of Venezuela following two powerful back-to-back earthquakes that struck the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, causing widespread destruction, loss of life, and injuries.
The seismic events, which sent tremors across parts of the Caribbean and northern South America, were also felt in Guyana, prompting concern among residents. Reports indicate that the earthquakes have claimed dozens of lives and left hundreds injured, while significant damage has been reported to buildings and infrastructure in affected areas.
In a statement on Thursday, President Ali said Guyana stands ready to assist its neighbour during this difficult period.
“As neighbours, we are deeply saddened by the scale, magnitude, and destruction caused by the two powerful back-to-back earthquakes that struck Caracas yesterday and so far, claiming dozens of lives and injuring hundreds.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela.
As neighbours, we are ready to offer assistance within our capacity. Our love, prayers, and thoughts are with the families of those affected and the people of Venezuela.”
The expression of solidarity comes at a time when Guyana itself is grappling with the aftermath of severe weather conditions. Strong winds and storms have battered communities along the Essequibo Coast, damaging homes, schools, government buildings, and other infrastructure. Emergency response teams have been working around the clock to assess damage and provide assistance to affected families.
Despite facing its own challenges, Guyana has joined other countries across the region in extending condolences and support to Venezuela as rescue and recovery operations continue.
The earthquakes have renewed concerns about the vulnerability of Caribbean and South American nations to natural disasters, with regional leaders emphasizing the importance of cooperation, preparedness, and mutual assistance in times of crisis.
