Police investigating death of Berbice teen after crash during pursuit

The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 16-year-old Aftaz King of Eliza Mary Race Course, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to the Police Force, the incident occurred at about 6:45 p.m. on Thursday along the Princeton Access Road, Corentyne.
Preliminary enquiries indicate that King was riding motorcycle CL 5607 when he allegedly attempted to evade a police patrol. Police said he subsequently lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a utility pole.
The teenager sustained injuries in the crash and was rushed to the No. 75 Regional Public Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead on arrival.
However, residents in the area have disputed the police’s version of events. Several persons alleged that the teenager’s motorcycle was struck during the pursuit by the police vehicle, causing him to lose control before crashing. Those claims have not been verified.
The Office of Professional Responsibility has since commenced an investigation into the incident. Police said the probe will examine all aspects of what transpired and determine whether there was any criminal or disciplinary culpability on the part of officers involved.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and assured King’s relatives and the public that appropriate action would be taken should the investigation establish any criminal or disciplinary wrongdoing.
Investigations remain ongoing.
