Argument ends in tragedy as man stabs wife, dumps body in canal

A 46-year-old woman, whose body was found in a canal near her De Groot, West Coast Demerara house on Thursday was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband, who later admitted to the killing and told Police what led to the attack.
The body of Shavannie Hanoman was discovered at about 08:30 hrs in a canal a short distance from her home.
According to reports gathered by the News Room, Hanoman had been involved in an argument with her husband, Hemat Kumar Mohamed, on Wednesday night. The couple had been together for some 26 years. However, earlier this month, the woman moved out of the family home following a series of ongoing arguments. On Wednesday, she visited the home to cook food for her family.
Mohamed reportedly told investigators that the confrontation on Wednesday began after his wife attempted to return to her mother’s home in Cornelia Ida. He said he believed that because she had come back and prepared a meal, she intended to stay. However, she later told him that she would be home late and asked him not to follow her.
Their daughter reportedly told investigators that after the argument, Hanoman left the house, with Mohamed following behind her. According to the daughter, that was the last time her mother was seen alive.
Mohamed was subsequently arrested and questioned during which the News Room was told that he reportedly blurted out, “I just juk she two times.”
“Last night (Wednesday) she left say she a go home late after 19:00 hours and she nah wan me follow she, me ride out behind she and when me reach at de bridge me tell she leh she son carry she home.
“We start argue and she chuck me so me tek de knife and juk she two times one to she chest and de other to she chin then me push she in de trench and de knife drop right deh,” Mohamed reportedly detailed to the Police.
Hanoman was stabbed to her chest and chin.
Police said Mohamed later agreed to take investigators to his home, where he pointed out the bedroom from which he had allegedly taken the knife.
He then led ranks to a wooden bridge at De Groot, where he identified the spot where he allegedly stabbed Hanoman and pushed her into the canal.
Mohamed was subsequently taken to the Leonora Police Station, where he remains in custody as investigations continue.
