One of Guyana’s most anticipated cultural events is making its return, and this year it is inviting audiences into a world of mystery, myth and music.

PanJam, Guyana’s premier annual steelpan concert, will return for its eighth consecutive year on Saturday, July 25, at the historic Railway Courtyard under the theme “Folklore.” The production promises an immersive experience inspired by the legendary tales that have been passed down through generations across Guyana and the wider Caribbean.

What began as a small fundraising concert by accomplished Guyanese pannist and attorney Reon Miller while he was attending law school has evolved into one of the country’s signature cultural showcases.

Each edition has embraced a unique theme—from Garden of Steel and World of Colours to last year’s PanJam In De Village. This year’s production ventures into Caribbean folklore, bringing to life familiar characters such as the Ole Higue, Fairmaid, Bacoo and La Diablesse through the powerful sound of the steelpan.

“The pan has always been a vessel for cultural memory,” Miller said.

“This year, we’re reaching into the deepest parts of who we are as Caribbean people—the stories we grew up hearing that shaped our imagination, our fears and our sense of wonder. Many may see folklore as just a myth, but it’s about identity. It’s about where we come from. And there’s no better instrument to tell those stories than the pan.”

Adding regional flair to this year’s production is celebrated St. Lucian pannist and Carnival Ambassador Chazz, who will make his PanJam debut. Organisers say his performance will showcase the vibrant steelpan traditions of St. Lucia while complementing the show’s Caribbean-inspired theme.

In what is expected to be one of the biggest highlights of the evening, Guyana’s Soca King Jumo Primo will perform at PanJam for the first time, marking a major milestone for the annual concert.

Returning favourites include acclaimed saxophonist Jesse Schultz, whose performance last year captivated audiences, veteran solo pannist Clayton Daniels, and popular Guyanese vocalist Nekeita, whose appearances have become a staple of the event.

Also joining the lineup is internationally acclaimed musician, songwriter and producer Mark Batson, adding another dynamic element to an already star-studded programme.

Organisers say this year’s theme is particularly fitting as Guyana continues to celebrate its rich cultural heritage while experiencing rapid national development. They hope the concert will inspire audiences in Guyana and across the diaspora to reconnect with the stories and traditions that have shaped Caribbean identity.

Early bird tickets are now available through the Potsalt app and website, with organisers encouraging patrons to secure their seats early for what promises to be another unforgettable PanJam experience.
