Man dies in Leonora Police Station lockups; OPR launches probe


A 44-year-old man who was being held in connection with an alleged murder died while in police custody at the Leonora Police Station lockups on Saturday, prompting an investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
Police identified the deceased as Hemat Kumar Mohamed of De Groot-Enkline, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara. He was found hanging from a window grill inside the lockups with an item of clothing and was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Mohamed had been in custody in connection with the alleged murder of 46-year-old Shavannie Hanoman.
Investigations are ongoing.
