Herstelling/Little Diamond NDC building damaged by fire


A fire that swept through a section of the Herstelling/Little Diamond Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) building on Monday has caused significant damage to the facility.
The blaze also caused minor damage to the nearby Providence Nursery School, which has been temporarily closed while assessments and remedial works are carried out.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, has assured residents of the Herstelling/Little Diamond area that the scheduled cash grant distribution will proceed as planned despite thr fire. She explained that although the distribution was originally set to take place at Providence Nursery School, the exercise has been relocated to the undamaged section of the Herstelling/Little Diamond NDC building to ensure residents receive their grants without interruption.

The Minister visited the NDC on Monday morning to assess the damage caused by the blaze and meet with firefighters, NDC staff, teachers from the nearby Providence Nursery School, and the security guard who bravely attempted to extinguish the fire before emergency responders arrived.
During the visit, Minister Manickchand commended the Guyana Fire Service for its prompt response and praised the security guard for his courage and quick action in trying to contain the fire.
Minister Manickchand said the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is working closely with the relevant agencies to assess the damage, restore normal operations at the affected facilities, and ensure the continued delivery of essential services to the community.
