The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development continues to advance plans for the revitalisation of Stabroek Market and surrounding areas as part of a broader vision to enhance Georgetown’s functionality, accessibility, and appeal while preserving its rich heritage.

During a planning meeting, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, met with technical personnel from the King’s Foundation. They reviewed the progress of preliminary concepts and discussed approaches to modernising one of the city’s most significant commercial and cultural landmarks, Stabroek Market.

Discussions focused on creating a revitalised urban environment that supports vendors, businesses, commuters, and visitors while improving the overall experience of those who live, work, and travel through the city. Particular attention was given to ensuring that future development remains inclusive, protects livelihoods, and responds to the evolving needs of Georgetown.

The meeting also examined broader opportunities to improve public spaces, encourage sustainable urban development, and enhance the city’s attractiveness as a commercial and tourism destination. Emphasis was placed on the importance of preserving Georgetown’s unique character while embracing people-centred development.

Minister Manickchand reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to a consultative planning process, noting that the objective is to ensure communities and stakeholders benefit from future development initiatives while safeguarding the historic significance of Stabroek Market and the surrounding urban landscape.

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development will continue to engage relevant stakeholders as planning progresses and will provide further updates as the initiative advances (Ministry of Local Government & Regional Development press release)
