Education Minister confident NGSA results will reflect improvements

Education Minister Sonia Parag has said she is confident in this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) performance, though she declined to release details ahead of the official results announcement on July 10.
Parag spoke to reporters on the sideline of an event on Wednesday and said that the results for July 10 are expected to be good and she is proud of the pupils. More than 15,900 pupils registered to sit this year’s examination in April.
“Guyana has done well. I’m very proud of our students,” she said.
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is tasked with marking the papers and providing the analysis of the grades each year.
The minister was asked about seeing improvement in the Mathematics results and she confirmed the gains as part of the preliminary information from CXC but she did not elaborate further.
She also attributed the anticipated improvements to the initiatives taken this year.
Some of the schools had virtual classes and some tents were set up to provide extra support for studying prior to the examination and targeted interventions were introduced to better equip students.
A rise in math performance would extend a trend from last year’s assessment. In the 2025 NGSA, the mathematics pass rate reached 55.51 percent, the highest national score recorded in the subject to date, up from 40.36 percent the year before. Overall, students had an overall pass rate of 63 percent in 2025, up from 49 percent in 2024, along with improvements in English Language, Social Studies and Science.
