Hope, resilience and transformation took centre stage as Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc. celebrated the graduation of the latest cohort of the Braids of Hope Programme, marking the successful completion of an intensive 15-week training initiative designed to equip women with professional braiding skills and the confidence to pursue economic independence.

The graduating class comprised young women from communities across Guyana, each bringing unique experiences and aspirations to the programme. Over the course of 15 weeks, they developed professional braiding techniques, strengthened their entrepreneurial knowledge, and built the confidence needed to pursue careers in the beauty industry. Their achievements were celebrated before an audience of proud parents, children, relatives, friends, community leaders, programme partners, and supporters, whose presence reflected the strong network of encouragement that helped make this milestone possible.

Chief Executive Officer Ms. Andrea Benjamin described the programme as a journey of transformation, using the butterfly as a powerful symbol of the graduates’ experiences. Through a moving spoken word presentation, she reminded the women that true growth happens long before success is visible. Like the

caterpillar, they committed themselves to learning, persevered through challenges, and emerged stronger, more confident, and ready to spread their wings. She encouraged the graduates to embrace the opportunities before them, reminding them that they had been empowered to become more than they once believed possible.

Chairman Mr. Paul Chan A Sue challenged the graduates to view their accomplishment as the beginning of an entrepreneurial journey rather than its conclusion. He encouraged them to continue developing both their technical and business skills, apply the knowledge gained throughout the programme, and confidently establish their own businesses. He emphasized that their success would not only transform their own lives but would also inspire others and contribute to building a more self sufficient Guyana.

Programme Facilitator Ms. Sacha Gill reflected on the remarkable progress she witnessed throughout the programme, noting that many participants began with little or no braiding experience. Through patience, practice, and determination, the graduates developed the confidence, discipline, and technical expertise needed to succeed in the beauty industry. She encouraged them to remain committed to continuous learning, professionalism, and excellence while believing in their own potential.

Entrepreneur and Owner of Glammy Tammy Hair Stories, Ms. Tamar Hackette delivered an inspiring and practical message on the realities of entrepreneurship. Drawing from her own experiences, she encouraged the graduates to embrace hard work, provide exceptional customer service, remain accessible to clients, and approach every opportunity with humility and professionalism. She reminded the women that reputation, consistency, and resilience are the foundations of every successful business.

Representing Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc., Ms. Valini Leitch celebrated the graduates’ journey from uncertainty to confidence, emphasizing that growth is achieved through patience, perseverance, and consistent practice. She encouraged the graduates to continue refining their skills, believe in themselves, and treat every client with kindness, respect, and professionalism.

Adding an emotional and memorable touch to the ceremony, Ms. Nashava Thompson captivated the audience with a heartfelt spoken word performance that beautifully illustrated the graduates’ journey of transformation. Through the imagery of the caterpillar becoming a butterfly, she celebrated the courage, determination, and resilience of each graduate, reminding them that they are now ready to spread their wings, embrace new opportunities, and confidently pursue their dreams.

The ceremony was filled with heartfelt moments as family members, friends, community leaders, and programme partners applauded the graduates’ achievements. Many of the graduates were joined by their children, who proudly watched their mothers cross the stage, making the occasion a powerful reminder that education and skills training have the potential to create lasting generational change. The unwavering support shown throughout the ceremony underscored the importance of community in empowering women to achieve their goals.

The Braids of Hope Programme continues to demonstrate the transformative power of skills training by providing women with practical opportunities to earn sustainable incomes, build successful businesses, and strengthen their families and communities. Through strategic partnerships and dedicated facilitators, Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc. remains committed to creating pathways that empower individuals to achieve lasting economic independence.

As the graduates embark on this exciting new chapter, they leave not only with professional braiding skills but also with renewed confidence, entrepreneurial knowledge, and the belief that their futures are filled with limitless possibilities (Food for the Poor press release)
