Boat captain dies in Berbice River accident

Alvin Adams, a 60-year-old boat captain of New Amsterdam, Berbice, died Friday night in an accident on the western side of the Berbice River, near Jeep Landing, Kwakwani Village.
In a release, Police Headquarters said a barge used for the transportation of timber was reportedly drifting downstream due to the strong river current when a tugboat went to render assistance. As the tugboat approached the drifting barge, the two vessels collided. As a result, Adams, who was on the tugboat at the time, became trapped between the two vessels and sustained severe injuries.
The boat captain was immediately rescued and transported to the Kwakwani Public Hospital, where he was examined but pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
The body is presently at the said hospital awaiting transportation to G-Jetsco Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
Investigations are ongoing.
