Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) has recorded a decline in road fatalities and overall traffic crashes so far this year but concern remain over the unsafe practices among motorcyclists.

Speaking during a recent episode of ‘Road Safety and You’ programme, Inspector George, who is attached to Regional Division Six, said the division has seen a decrease in fatal accidents and road deaths when compared with the corresponding period last year.

According to statistics provided by Inspector George, the region recorded seven fatal accidents from January 1 to date this year, down from nine during the same period in 2025. Road fatalities also declined from 14 last year to nine this year.

Inspector George added that the overall number of traffic accidents has also fallen, with 48 crashes recorded so far this year compared to 58 during the corresponding period last year.

The figures, he said, represent a 17 percent decrease in overall accidents in the policing division.

Despite the positive trend, Sergeant Pellow, who heads the Traffic Department at the Springlands Police Station, said unsafe behaviour among motorcyclists remains a major concern.

She noted that many riders continue to disregard traffic laws by operating motorcycles without safety helmets and carrying pillion riders who are also not wearing helmets.

Sergeant Pellow further highlighted the growing issue of motorcyclists removing the silencers from their motorcycles, creating excessive noise and violating road traffic regulations.

While Police continue efforts to address these offences through enforcement, Sergeant Pellow stressed that road safety ultimately depends on individuals making responsible decisions and complying with the law.
