Traffic lights on Heroes Highway to improve road safety – Traffic Chief

Traffic lights are being installed at key intersections along the Heroes Highway as part of efforts to improve road safety and better manage the flow of traffic along one of the country’s busiest roadways, Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh said on Tuesday.
Singh told the News Room that the infrastructure for the traffic signals is already being put in place.
“You can physically verify that the traffic lights, the infrastructure is being installed along the Heroes Highway.
“You could see that components of the traffic light signal is already mounted on the overpass at key intersections along the Heroes Highway,” Singh said.
The Heroes Highway has a maximum speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour (km/h), with reduced speed zones of 50 km/h and 30 km/h near roundabouts and interlink roads.
The installation of traffic lights at intersections is intended to further improve safety by regulating traffic movement where vehicles from different directions converge.
According to Singh, traffic signals provide greater control over the movement of vehicles, allowing priority to be given to different directions of traffic while reducing the risk of collisions at intersections.
He said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to improve road safety and enhance road use across the country.
“Like every other road in Guyana where they are major roads and minor roads and there are intersection it has to be placed,” he said.
Singh also addressed concerns that the new lights would slow traffic along the highway.
“It’s not to say traffic lights will impede the smooth movement of traffic, it will enhance it,” he noted.
