Gov’t to roll out 21 model communities soon – Manickchand

The Government is moving ahead with plans to develop 21 model communities across Guyana, with works expected to begin rolling out shortly, according to Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Guyana Dialogue programme, Manickchand said the initiative is aimed at rapidly transforming communities through coordinated planning and infrastructure upgrades.
“We are in the process right now of looking to see how we can make it, by doing it very fast and efficiently, model communities in 21 areas in various regions.
You will see that being rolled out very shortly,” Manickchand said.
She explained that the model communities will feature concrete drains, properly marked roads, street lights, green areas or play parks and public building that are accessible.
To advance the initiative, Manickchand said several government ministries have joined forces to coordinate the planning process.
“There is a group now of ministries, from Local Government, Public Works, Agriculture, Housing, we got together actually and we have assigned engineers and planners to the 21 communities so we could know exactly what is required for that scope to be fulfilled,” she said.
It is not yet known which communities will be included in the first phase of the programme or when construction is expected to begin.
“You will see that being rolled out very shortly,” Manickchand said however.
