Security guard remanded for murder of gold miner

Ormyous Vieira, a 27-year-old security guard of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was remanded to prison after being charged for the murder of 32-year-old gold miner, Ceton Courtman.

Vieira appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Thursday before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed. He was not required to plead and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to August 17, 2026, for continuation.

Courtman was shot and killed during an altercation with the security guard at Sands Backdam, Cuyuni River, on Monday morning.

Courtman was rushed to the Aurora Gold Mines Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators recovered and lodged a Taurus .32 pistol along with 12 matching live rounds of ammunition as part of the investigation.
