The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), on July 09, 2026, launched two new verification services, Verification of Tint Meters and Verification of Sound Level Meters, further expanding its measurement services to support law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

The new services will become available effective July 13, 2026. The launch was held at GNBS Head Office at the National Exhibition Centre, Sophia, Georgetown.

The new verification services are intended to ensure the accuracy and reliability of instruments used to measure Vehicle Visible Light Transmission (VLT) and environmental sound levels, in accordance with the relevant standards and regulatory requirements.

The verification of these measuring instruments will promote consistency, transparency and confidence in enforcement activities undertaken by the relevant authorities. Accurate and reliable measurements also strengthen the credibility of evidence presented during legal and judicial proceedings.

As part of the implementation of the new services, Inspectors of GNBS Legal Metrology Department, along with representatives from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), completed two specialised training sessions in the verification of sound level meters and tint meters.

These training sessions were provided to enhance participants’ technical knowledge and practical competencies in the verification of these instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability within the national measurement system.

With the equipment and training, the Bureau’s Legal Metrology Department is further strengthened to support public safety and protection, regulatory compliance and industry efficiency. The new verification services will also further enhance inter-agency collaboration and support the consistent application of measurement standards in regulatory and enforcement activities.

Importantly, tint meters and sound level meters are required to be verified every six (6) months to maintain measurement accuracy. The approved cost recovery fees are as follows:

§  Sound Level Meters (Private Entities): $3,000 per instrument

§  Sound Level Meters (Government Ministries and Agencies): $20,000 per instrument

§  Tint Meters (All Users): $10,000 per instrument

Businesses, government agencies and other users of tint and sound level meters are encouraged to have their instruments verified within the prescribed six-month period to ensure continued compliance with regulatory requirements.

For further information on these and other measurement services, contact the GNBS on telephone numbers 219-0064-66, WhatsApp 692-4627, email [email protected] or visit www.gnbsgy.org. (GNBS press release)
