Aspiring Civil Engineer Tyrese Abrams of the Regma Primary School copped the top position for Region 10 at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) with a perfect score. This also positioned him as one of the country’s top performers. This exceptional performance is celebrated by his teacher, Richlyn Paton, the school and the community.

The ecstatic Abrams said he expected to do well but was surprised at his perfect score, which placed him among the top 20 performers in the country. Despite keeping a strict schedule throughout the preparation process, he said balance was still maintained.

“Everything was balanced; I had lessons in the afternoon after school, but I had time to play, time to go to church and time to study,” he said.

His mother said she credits God for his success at the exam.

Tyrese’s teacher, Miss Richlyn Paton, said she incorporated play into learning to make the preparation process challenging but not overwhelming.

“Miss Shinezy Jeffrey and I worked tirelessly to support each child. Whenever we felt overwhelmed, we would recite affirmations, especially our favourite quote: ‘Nothing in life is to be feared, only to be understood.’ Those words reminded us to keep going and inspired our pupils to believe in themselves,” she said.

Similar sentiments were echoed by One Mile’s Primary Sir Rawle Forde, the teacher of Za’ Dariyah Hudson who copped the second position for Region 10 with a score of 483.63. She was also awarded a place at Queen’s College.

Forde said that after working tirelessly, seeing Hudson’s and his other students’ success brings a bright, exciting and rewarding feeling. He tried different teaching methods to ensure concepts were understood and applied.

“The journey was challenging, sometimes strenuous; there was a lot of reading, but those children were up to the challenge, and when the children are up to it, it motivates the teacher,” he noted.

The ecstatic young Hudson said being the top performer for One Mile Primary School was always one of her greatest dreams and highest priorities. “Achieving this goal means that I gave my very best and proved to myself that hard work, determination, and perseverance truly make a difference. The journey was long and exhausting, filled with many sleepless nights and moments when I questioned whether all the effort would be worth it. However, I never gave up because I was surrounded by people who believed in me,” she said.

Following Hudson is Mickel Fiedkou of Amelia’s Ward Primary School who was also awarded a place at Queen’s College with a score of 483.61.  Fiedkou said Queen’s College is his dream school and it feels amazing to be awarded a place there. The aspiring lawyer credited consistent revision and encouragement from his parents and teacher Shauna Corlette for his success.

The other five students on the TOP 10 list who secured spots at The Queen’s College are Xavia Carmichael of the Watooka Day Primary School, Christina Jackson and Malik Brush of Amelia’s Ward Primary School, and Keron Munroe and Avery Murray of the One Mile Primary School. Leanna Peters of the One Mile Primary School and Taraji Payne copped places at The Bishops’ High School.

This year 846 students wrote the NGSA exams from Region 10.
