Youth archery takes centre stage as 31 competitors battle it out at national championships

The future of Guyanese archery was on full display at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club Ground in Eve Leary on Saturday, as 31 of the country’s finest young archers took to the targets for the qualification rounds of the National Youth 18 Metres Championships 2026.
Representing a vibrant mix of school and private clubs, the competitors showcased remarkable discipline and focus in a high-stakes competitive environment, signalling a significant step forward for the sport’s development in the region.
The opening day’s action was punctuated by a high-profile visit from Steven Jacobs, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Minister Jacobs spent time on the ground engaging directly with the field, learning the finer points of the discipline, and delivering an inspiring address to the athletes on the importance of resilience, handling pressure, and learning from failure in elite sport.
Behind the scenes, the tournament was overseen by a rigorous technical delegation, led by Chairman of Judges Ryan McKinnon and Director of Shooting Afzal Karim, ensuring international standards were maintained.
Crucially for fans and scouts tracking the action, the event utilised the internationally recognised IANSEO live scoring software, with full qualification breakdowns now published online.
Organisers Archery Guyana expressed immense gratitude to key figures who made the event possible, including Commissioner of Police Dr. Clifton Hicken and Sports Development Officer Colin Boyce, alongside the National Sports Commission and Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle.
Athletes and officials were kept hydrated during a grueling day of competition courtesy of Guyana Beverages Inc., who supplied Oasis Water and Altitude drinks.
Attention now turns swiftly to Sunday’s blockbuster finals. The stage is set for a dramatic conclusion as the country’s top-ranked young talent go head-to-head for national honours, with championship medals on the line in the Recurve Under-15 (Men and Women Combined), Barebow Under-15 Women, and Barebow Under-18 Men divisions.
