Rosignol pensioner dies after electric bike struck by car

A 77-year-old Rosignol man was killed on Saturday night after the electric bike he was riding was struck by a motor car along the D’ Edward Public Road, West Bank Berbice (WBB).
Dead is Kundal Persaud, a shop owner of Lot 51 Bacchus Street, Rosignol Village.
Police said the accident occurred at about 8:15 p.m. when motor car PLL 4307, driven by a 25-year-old man of Canefield Settlement, East Canje, was travelling west at an alleged speed of 70 to 80 km/h. Investigators said the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with Persaud, who was travelling east on an electric cycle along the southern footpath.
The impact threw Persaud onto the roadway. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and a police officer and rushed to the Bath Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Persaud’s son, Arnold, told reporters that he learned of the crash from his nephew and rushed to the scene, but his father had already been taken to the hospital.
He claimed his father suffered severe injuries to his head, neck, feet and other parts of his body. Arnold also alleged that he found the electric bike lodged beneath the car and claimed the driver attempted to leave the scene before being stopped by residents, who instructed him to report to the Blairmont Police Station.
“We want justice because that accident more worse than goat killing. Is a hard knock. If he de get a lash normal and dead wasn’t bad but he tear up. And then again, he [car driver] drag the scooter to carry it a distance and throw away. He nah even say stop and pick the man up with sympathy to carry him to the hospital,” Arnold said.
The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
