Police have launched an investigation after a 14-year-old boy reportedly disappeared while swimming in the Corentyne River on Monday afternoon.

The missing teen has been identified as Daveanand Balram from Number 60 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

His mother, Gayartee Rambhajan, said she was informed of the incident around 14:00hrs on Monday. According to information she received, Daveanand had been swimming with three other boys in the Corentyne Backtrack area when he suddenly disappeared beneath the water.

Rambhajan, who lives in Region Five while her son had been staying with his father in Region Six, said she last spoke with him on July 2.

Residents immediately searched the area following the incident but were unable to locate the teenager. The family has since continued searching the riverbank, but limited resources have hampered their efforts.

“There is no search at the moment because I don’t have a boat. I am not in the position to get a boat to help search for him,” the distraught mother said.

She also revealed that the three boys who were with Daveanand had been teaching him how to swim.

“He is not a good swimmer. He does not know how to swim,” she said.

The disappearance has been reported to the Springlands Police Station, and investigations remain ongoing as authorities continue efforts to determine what happened to the teenager.
