Venezuela-based gang suspected behind threats against CANU Head

Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit, James Singh, says authorities are continuing to investigate death threats against him believed to be linked to a suspected Venezuela-based criminal group, as regional cooperation intensifies to identify those behind the alleged plot.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event on Wednesday, Singh said the threat originated outside of Guyana and that intelligence gathered so far points to a Spanish-speaking group operating from Venezuela.
“I am still here so that’s a good sign,” Singh said.
He explained that CANU is working with international and regional partners, despite challenges in direct communication with Venezuelan authorities.
“We are still working with international counterparts because this threat originated outside of Guyana. Based on information that we got, it’s a Spanish group, we suspect out of Venezuela, so we are working with our counterparts,” Singh said.
Singh said information is being shared with partners across the region as investigators seek to determine the source of the threats.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have that sort of communication with Venezuela as we have with other countries, but we are sharing some information with counterparts here and in the region and we are hoping our best to at least get to the bottom of it or dissuade them from trying,” Singh said.
The threats were previously acknowledged by the Ministry of Home Affairs in May 2026, which noted that they came amid heightened anti-narcotics operations by CANU.
Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken had said the threats are being treated seriously, warning that those responsible will be held accountable.
