‘We aim to rescue everyone’ – PM says as response effort continues after MV Barima capsizes

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips says several teams have been deployed and are involved in a robust search-and-rescue effort to save all 116 passengers and the 17 crew members who were onboard the capsized MV Barima.

So far, 53 persons have been rescued. The vessel was heading to Port Kaituma, Region One.

Prime Minister Phillips, speaking at a Sunday morning press briefing, said there have been no reported deaths so far. The names of the rescued individuals are not being released as the response effort is still ongoing.

However, PM Phillips said, “Our effort is aimed at rescuing everyone who was on that ferry.”

Other updates:

1. Several vessels have been deployed to the area, as rescue efforts are continuous efforts
2. Medical facilities have been set up to provide support to the rescued individuals
3. Family support centres are being set up in Port Kaituma, Region One, and at the Umana Yana in Georgetown to provide updates to distressed relatives
