MV Barima victim Kevin Wilson laid to rest, remembered as caring person

A mother’s heartbreaking cries filled the funeral yard on Thursday as she said her final goodbye to her son, Kevin Wilson, 28, one of the victims of the MV Barima tragedy.

Wilson, who was part of the vessel’s crew, had been employed with the Transport and Harbours Department for two years.

He was remembered by those who knew him as a caring and dependable son who always made time for the people around him.

The grief was overwhelming even before the funeral began.

As Wilson’s body arrived in a hearse, relatives broke down in tears, with some holding onto each other for support as they struggled to cope with the painful reality of his passing.

Wilson’s mother became so overcome with emotion that she lost consciousness and had to be attended to by family members before Wilson’s body even entered the yard for viewing.

As she leaned over his closed casket, she cried out, “God. Meh son dead, me can see how me son fight up”.

She spoke of the son who always cared for others, remembering how he would make time to check on everyone.

“Everybody he gah check, if he get half day time everybody he got check. Who go check me now, father? Who go help me?”

Through tears, she mourned the simple moments they would never share again.

“Who go go fah meh plantain? Who I go call when me want go do a business… meh good, good son.”

Surrounded by family members as they gathered around Wilson’s coffin to say their final farewell, his mother cried, “Son sleep, sleep son. This world full of troubles.”

The funeral service was filled with prayers, tributes, and reflections from relatives, friends and well-wishers who came to stand with the grieving family.
