Electric fire leaves eight homeless in Linden

Eight people, including six children, are now homeless following a fire that completely gutted a house in Section C Christianburg, Wismar, Linden on Friday.

The matriarch of the home, 60-year-old Laura Chung, said the fire was caused by constant low voltage the community was experiencing.

She said she reported the issue to the Linden Utilities Services Co-operative Society Limited (LUSCSL) multiple times but nothing was done. She even complained to the meter reading staff about the situation after noticing the connecting external wire on flames over the past two weeks.

On Friday, she was sitting on the back step when a neighbour called out that the house was smoking.

“When I checked inside, the whole house was ‘black, black’ in smoke; my husband had to go in end up blacking out. He had to get rescue,” she related.

Chung said she lived at the house all her life and now shares it with her husband, three grandchildren and three other children she had opened her home to.

She estimates the losses to be in the millions as it was a fully furnished home.

“Last week my husband went a bought a new fridge because the old one spoil because of the same low voltage thing.”

The now homeless woman is calling on the management of LUSCSL to seriously investigate the electricity woes the community is experiencing as this can result in others losing their home too. She is seeking refuge at her daughter.
