GFF’s Elite League returns August 29

Guyana’s premier men’s club competition, the Guyana Football Federation’s  Elite League, will return for its highly anticipated eighth season on August 29, 2026.

The new campaign arrives following a landmark Season 7, which attracted more than 27,000 spectators and generated upwards of 50 million digital views.

Defending champions Slingerz FC—currently flying the flag for Guyana at the 2026 CFU Club Shield in Trinidad and Tobago following a 4-0 first-round routing of SWA Sharks FC—headline a competitive 10-team roster.

They will be joined by Guyana Police Force FC, Guyana Defence Force FC, Western Tigers FC, Santos FC, Monedderlust FC, Ann’s Grove United, Den Amstel FC, Fruta Conquerors FC, and newly promoted Camptown FC.

The top-flight campaign will unfold over two rounds during an eight-month marathon.

The opening phase runs from August to November 2026, with the title race resuming from February to May 2027.

GFF President Wayne Forde believes the league’s continued growth is crucial to the nation’s wider footballing ambitions and presence across the Caribbean.

“The Elite League represents the pinnacle of domestic club football in Guyana and remains central to our vision for the continued advancement of the game,” Forde said.

“The success of Season 7 and Slingerz FC’s current representation of Guyana on the regional stage demonstrate the importance of providing our clubs and players with a strong, consistent and competitive national platform.”

The August kick-off coincides with a landmark restructuring of the broader domestic football calendar.

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has officially aligned its 2026/27 ecosystem with FIFA’s international match windows, most notably consolidating the traditional September and October breaks into a single 16-day window.

The GFF says the move will “improve access to professional players for national team duty,” drastically reduce club-and-country scheduling conflicts, and introduce a much-needed “predictability across the football ecosystem” for better financial and operational planning.

• Elite League Cup: A transitional tournament is slated for February-March 2026 to provide match fitness ahead of August, before permanently moving to a post-season slot (May-June) from 2027 onwards.

• Matches played: Elite League clubs are now guaranteed a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 32 matches per season across all sanctioned competitions.

• Cup competitions: The GFF Super 16 Cup will take centre stage as a marquee mid-season event (November-January), while the unified Federation Cup will bring Elite and Regional clubs together from April to June.

• Regional & Women’s Leagues: Both the Regional Association Leagues and the 10-team Women’s Division One League will now run concurrently on fixed September-to-April schedules.

• Youth development: Under-13 and Under-15 action will dominate the school holidays (July-August). The Under-17s will compete from August to November, a move deliberately timed to prepare players for January and February FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

• Promotion pathways: Elite League Promotional Playoffs will now take place annually in May, reinforcing a merit-based pathway from the regional levels.

Calling it a “major advancement,” Forde added: “It delivers tangible benefits to every stakeholder in the game. This is a critical step in building a modern, professional, and sustainable football structure for Guyana.” (Modified Press Release)
