Guyana’s historic debut at the Commonwealth Games 3×3 Basketball competition came to an agonising conclusion on Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland, as the national quartet was edged 20-19 by Nigeria in a dramatic final Group A fixture.

Entering the clash with newfound momentum, the Guyanese men had just etched their names into the history books.

After opening the tournament with a 21-14 loss to host nation Scotland and suffering a tough 21-3 defeat at the hands of New Zealand, the team rebounded spectacularly to defeat the Cayman Islands 21-17.

That triumph proudly marked Guyana’s first-ever win in Commonwealth Games 3×3 basketball.

Knowing another victory was essential to keep their tournament hopes alive, the Guyanese delivered what was arguably their most clinical performance against the world number 56-ranked Nigerians. Anish Ramlall was phenomenal on the offensive end, while Kevin Mickle and Christian Hinckson anchored a gritty defensive effort that kept Guyana firmly in the hunt. Travis Belgrave was equally essential, stepping up in clutch moments to contribute six vital points.

The contest was a fierce, seesaw battle. When Nigeria threatened to pull away in the latter half, Guyana showcased immense resilience. Ramlall sparked a late surge, draining consecutive two-pointers to erase the deficit and tie the game at 19-19, setting the stage for a nail-biting finale.

However, with a mere five seconds left on the clock, Nigeria utilized a crucial timeout to draw up a decisive pick-and-roll. Despite suffocating defense from Hinckson, experienced Nigerian international Marcel Esonwune managed to release a shot at the buzzer, sinking the game-winner to break Guyanese hearts. Ramlall finished the fiercely contested matchup with a game-high 10 points.

Following the defeat, Guyana Olympic Association Vice President Steve Ninvalle met with the squad to commend their exceptional fighting spirit.

He lauded the players for their stellar representation of the Golden Arrowhead on a major international stage, praising the grit they showcased throughout the tournament.

Though the campaign ultimately concludes in the group stage, Guyana leaves Glasgow with their heads held high. The historic victory over the Cayman Islands and the sheer tenacity displayed by Ramlall, Belgrave, Mickle, and Hinckson have undoubtedly laid a robust foundation for the future of Guyanese 3×3 basketball on the international stage.
