Shivnarine Chanderpaul struck a masterful ton, but his effort could not prevent Guyana Jaguars from going down to another defeat in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Super50 against Jamaica Scorpions in Barbados.
Playing in the day/night contest on Thursday, the Jaguars lost by 41 runs after Scorpions posted 249-8, opting to bat first. It was the Jaguars’ second defeat of the competition, after a sound 145-run thrashing at the hands of Barbados Pride on Tuesday.
Jaguars’ total of 208 all out could have been significantly less had it not been for the 42-year-old Chanderpaul, who scored 101. The hundred came off 94 balls and included 12 fours and a six.
Only two batsmen got past 20- Anthony Bramble made 29 and Raymon Reifer 25. Steven Jacobs was the other player to reach double figures with 19, as all the others fell for scores between zero and four. The Jaguars were 14-4 at one stage.
Fast bowler Jerome Taylor was Scorpions’ best bowler with 5-40. Scorpions’ winning total was earlier built around Chadwick Walton’s 82, Devon Thomas’ 56 not out and Jermaine Blackwood’s 42. Bowling for Jaguars, Reifer, Jacobs and Veerasammy Permaul picked up two wickets each.
