A hire car driver is presently in police custody assisting with investigations into the death of a Corentyne man who he struck down on the #1 Public Road this morning (Monday, February 06, 2017).
The man who died while receiving treatment at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital has been identified as 60-year-old Ivan Prem of Albion Front, Corentyne, Berbice
News Room understands that Prem left his home at about 5:00 hours to go fishing at the #19 Public Road when he met his demise.
According to information received, Prem was riding his bicycle along the #1 Public Road when motor car HC 5120 which was allegedly speeding, hit him from behind, sending several feet away from the point of impact and breaking the cycle in half.
The elderly man was picked up by Public spirited citizens and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he succumbed hours later.
Speaking with reporters, the man’s wife, Arai Prem disclosed that hours after her husband left home to go fishing, she received information that he was involved in an accident. She added that she immediately rushed to the Hospital but was not allowed to see her husband.
News Room was told that the woman’s daughter was allowed to see her father and was told that he sustained internal injuries which contributed to his death.
Investigations are ongoing.
