The Police in Berbice are investigating the circumstances surrounding a brawl at the New Amsterdam Prison which resulted in three inmates sustaining injuries about their bodies on Saturday (April 22, 2017.)
The injured have been identified as 18 year old, Kishon Jeriwan; currently serving a two year sentence for break and enter and larceny, 20 year old, Joshua Sewchan of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice; who was convicted for trafficking cocaine and 25 year old, Quincy Goodhart of Essequibo who was sentenced to three years for possession of a gun and ammunition.
News Room understands that on the day in question the three prisoners were among other inmates in the Convicted Mess Hall of the New Amsterdam Prison when Goodhart approached Jeriwan and questioned him about top up for his cellular phone.
According to a Police source, an argument erupted between the two during which Goodhart dealt Jeriwan a punch to the face. News Room was informed that Jeriwan left and returned with a piece of wood and dealt Goodhart several lashes to his body and in return Goodhart pulled out an improvised weapon from his pants waist and dealt Jeriwan four stabs to his chest, shoulder, abdomen and right hand.
The third inmate, Joshua Sewchan, who was nearby was sustained a stab wound. When contacted, Commander of B Division, Ian Amsterdam disclosed that the three prisoners were admitted as patients at the New Amsterdam Hospital after being escorted there by prison officials for medical attention.
Investigations are ongoing.
