Top distance athlete Winston Missenger got a bit of revenge on his teammate Cleveland Thomas by easily defeating him on Sunday in the Independence 5k Run and Fitness Walk on Homestretch Avenue.

Thomas was in a class all by himself, showing of his speed after losing to Thomas in Suriname a little over a week ago. Missenger was happy with the win and told News Room Sport that it was a fulfilling win.

The top performers

Originally from Linden, Missenger noted that the race was a preview to the Independence 10k set to happen in a week’s time.

Meanwhile, Thomas took second in the event, while the bare-footed man from Linden, Nathaniel Giddings, even in the wet conditions, finished third.

Ashanti Scott of the Guyana Defence Force easily topped her competition to win the female category, while Ricky Williams won the Junior category. Gary Fagundes won the Master’s category to cap off the day’s action.

Chairman of the Guyana Committee of Services, Eugene Noel, who was part of the Organising Committee, highlighted that he was pleased with the event, noting the “economic downturn” of the nation at the moment took somewhat of a toll on the event.

However, Noel thanked their current crop of sponsors for their support, while spreading optimism of a much better event in 2018.
