Detectives in Berbice are making headway in solving a recent piracy attack which left one dead on the Corentyne Coast.
Speaking with reporters earlier today (Monday, May 22, 2017), Commander of ‘B’ Division, Ian Amsterdam disclosed that so far, a fisherman was arrested in connection with the attack. He was also found to be in possession of the stolen engine. Detectives are hunting for two other individuals whose name were provided after thoroughly questioning the suspect in custody.
“What I can say at this moment is that we have one person in custody who we are interviewing in detail and we are looking for two other persons, we know by now that the engine was recovered and based on that we are interviewing the suspect in custody,” Amsterdam said.
According to Amsterdam, detectives received certain information that the man arrested were a part of the gang that attacked and robbed the three fishermen out at sea on May 16, 2017.
On May 16, 2017, 21-year-old Permanand Nandan of Tain Village, Corentyne, 45-year-old Arjune Permaul of Kilcoy Squatting area and 45-year-old Mahadeo Ramdial, were attacked by masked men three miles out from the Tain foreshore. The suspects then left them to swim to shore. While Nandan and Permaul managed to swim to safety, Ramdial who was the Captain of the boat died from drowning.
