It was a mixture of heartbreak and triumph on the final day of the South American Junior Championship on Sunday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora. Guyana took its third gold medal of the championship in the Girl’s 4x400m for the host nation’s 25th medal of the championship in a time of 3:51.40s.

Guyana would have made it four gold medals after the male 4x400m team won the race, but was disqualified for handing over the baton before the takeover zone. Nevertheless, Guyana finished second overall in points standing with 198, while Brazil took the top spot with 287 points. Finishing third was Colombia with 165 points.

Meanwhile, sprint ace Compton Caesar took silver in the Male 200m with a time of 21.45s, while Brazil’s Derick DeSouza Silva won the event in a blistering time of 20.92s. Enzo Faulbaum of Chile was third in 22.55s.

Guyana also got silver and bronze in the Male High Jump with both Tortque Boyce and Daniel Williams jumping 1.90m, with Boyce taking silver and Williams bronze. Luan Barbosa De Souza of Brazil won the event with a leap of 1.95m.

Dennies Roberts won Guyana’s first-ever South America decathlon medal, copping a silver, while Ignacio Sanzhez won gold for Peru and Jordan Santos De Souza of Brazil took bronze.

Kimbily Hilliman won bronze for Guyana in the Female Javelin with a throw of 19.82m, while Yuleixi Angulo Bonilla of Ecuador won the event with a throw of 54.00m. Silver went to Fabielle Samir Ferreira of Brazil with a throw of 51.74m. Guyana also won silver in the Male 4x100m and bronze in the Female version.
