The joint services operation continues this morning (Monday, July 10, 2017) in an effort to recapture the escaped prisoners, the Department of Public Information said.
Members of the public are advised to take all necessary precautions as they go about their activities.
Persons are also asked to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station as the men “should be considered armed and dangerous.”
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) disclosed that it has so far recaptured 20-year-old Shawn Collins of lot 6 Ketley and Drydales Streets, Georgetown. Collins escaped whilst being transported with other prisoners to another location last night (Sunday, July 09, 2017) and was recaptured at about 01:50h on Monday morning on Hadfield Street.
Collins however, was not among the five original escapees.
The police force stated that contrary to previous reports, two of the five escapees were not recaptured.
Among those at large are Bartica and Lusignan massacre convict, Mark Royden Durant aka “Royden Williams” and “Smallie” and Uree Varswyck, both of whom the police have released wanted bulletins for.
The other three have not been identified as yet.
There were 1,018 prisoners at the facility on Sunday morning and according to the officials, majority of those persons were on remand. However, up to Sunday night, the police could not have stated how many persons were accounted for.
