Fire in Berbice leaves 4 homeless, suspected arsonist arrested

Members of the Guyana Police Force have arrested a man who is accused of setting a two bedroom, wooden and concrete structure on fire in Glasgow New Scheme, East Bank Berbice on Friday, November 17, 2017.

The fire which started just after 10:00hrs, has left four persons homeless including two pensioners. However, they were not at home when the fire started.

Seventeen-year-old Akeila Alexander, who was home alone when the fire started, told the News Room that her uncle, who was in the lower flat of the house, reportedly started the fire. The teenager said she jumped from the veranda and ran to alert neighbours who called the Guyana Fire Service.

However, by the time they arrived at the scene, the entire building was engulfed in flames. The suspect was seen running out of the yard. He was later apprehended by police and investigations are ongoing.
